We carefully clean, lubricate, and re-splice your films before scanning them. We use transfer equipment that does not use sprockets or claws like the old home movie projectors; thus it's much gentler on old, delicate films. We scan and transfer your film frame-by-frame, and present them as 1080p videos on hard drives or TV-ready DVDs. Our service includes basic cleanup and editing of each movie reel.
Most home movie film was made from cellulose triacetate. As the acetate in the film degrades, it produces acetic acid; more commonly known as vinegar. The acetic acid causes the plastic layer of the film to break down, which can lead to shrinking, warping, discoloration, and separation of the film's layers. It can also expose the gelatinous layer in the film, which can be gobbled up by mold, mildew and other microorganisms.
We use a time-consuming but proven method to halt Vinegar Syndrome and stop the films from degrading further. This process also cleans and lubricates the film, reducing the chance for damage while scanning.
